PR Web: Charleston Car Accident Lawyer at Clore Law Group LLC Supports Obama’s Proclaiming December 2012 as National Impaired Driving Prevention Month
Each year celebrations with family and friends end in tragedy when the reckless action of an impaired driver causes injury or death. December has been named National Impaired Driving Prevention Month to increase awareness of the catastrophic injury that can result from impaired driving.
Charleston car accident lawyer Sam Allen is pleased the presidential proclamation is bringing national attention to the effects of prescription and illegal drugs. President Barack Obama signed a proclamation naming December National Impaired Driving Prevention Month. We are all well aware of the efforts made to curb drunk driving, but this intends to spread awareness of other substances and/or drugs that can decrease one’s ability to safely and responsibly operate a motor vehicle.
“While the number drunk driving accidents has declined, catching those who are using prescription and other drugs still poses a challenge for law-enforcement officers,” said Sam Allen. “There isn’t a breath test machine to detect driving on drugs, like there is for dunk driving.”
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1 in 3 drivers who were killed in a motor vehicle crash in 2010 with known test results tested positive for drugs, including prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and banded substances. The NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) data reveals a decline in deadly car accidents over the last six years; however, the involvement of drugs in fatal crashes has increased by 6 percent over the same period of time.

The Presidents proclamation states:
“Families play an essential part in stopping impaired driving. By talking about the risks and setting clear expectations, parents and other caregivers can help their children stay safe, sober, and focused on the road. Educators, health care providers, and community leaders can join in that important work by promoting responsible decisionmaking and encouraging young people to live free of drugs and alcohol.”
The South Carolina Department of Transportation reports a slight increase in the mileage death rate in 2011. This statistical measure uses traffic fatalities per vehicular mile driven. Charleston is a busy city, bustling with commerce from the Port of Charleston as well as tourism in the downtown area. It has ranked as the most dangerous metro area in the entire state of South Carolina in which to drive.
“As an attorney, it is my responsibility to fight for the financial settlement needed by those injured by impaired drivers,” said Sam Allen. “If you were injured or someone you love killed by an impaired driver, you should contact an experienced Charleston attorney who has handled cases involving impaired drivers.”
