WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) – It’s a city with the nickname of ‘the front porch of the Lowcountry.’
“As you enter into the Lowcountry this is one of the first places you come to,” Walterboro’s Mayor, Bill Young said. “That’s what we have here small town America at its best.”
And this small town’s mayor likes to keep it that way. Walking around Walterboro feels like jumping straight into a storybook – from barber shops to slow talking laid-back attitudes, the city prides itself on having an old way of life.
“We have a lot of great people here, kind and caring people, we stick together in times of turmoil and in times of need and in times of celebration,” Mayor Young said.
The Mayor said the city has fought hard to overcome affiliations as a place with heightened crime.
“If you try to find a bright spot for the things that we experienced with crime here it would have to be that we realized we had to promote ourselves and talk about the positive things that are here.”
Mayor Young said he is most proud of leading the charge for legislation to make his city smoke-free even when it wasn’t a popular idea. He is also excited about the beautification projects going on in the city right now, including the downtown arborscape and renovation of the parks.
ABC News 4 will be broadcasting Live from Walterboro for our ‘Your Neighbors’ series on Thursday for Lowcountry Live at 10 a.m. and for the nightly newscasts at 6 and 7 p.m.
