ABC4News: Ready 4 The Storm: How the Lowcountry dealt with storms throughout history

To get a sense of how people in the Lowcountry dealt with hurricanes in the past, Chief Meteorologist Dave Williams took a trip to Drayton Hall Plantation. It has stood in Charleston since 1738.

“Two men on this plantation who had major roles to play during weather events like that were the driver and the patroon,” Amber Satterthwaite, the curator of education and museum programs at Drayton Hall, said. “The driver was the man who managed all the agricultural labor here at Drayton Hall and really acted as the boots on the ground, supervisor within the community.”
