Edisto set to catch and share the holiday spirit
Edisto invites visitors and residents to catch the spirit of the holiday season
Edisto Island, S.C. — The Edisto Island and Edisto Beach communities are throwing out some lines inviting all those who love the holiday season, especially close to the coast, to jump into some new events and seasonal favorites and reel in the holiday season the island way. Lower seasonal rates on rentals add to the holiday allure and could make for a nice stocking stuffer too.
As a prelude to the upcoming holidays, “Lovesongs – A Recital,” featuring Bergen Baker and James Barnett, is set for Sunday, November 8, at 2:00 pm, at the Presbyterian Church on Edisto Island. On November 10 at 7:00 p.m. at the New First Baptist Church, Bill Davies will give a talk on “Robert Mills – America’s First Native-Born Architect” as part of the Edisto Island Historic Preservation Society’s Lecture Series. For more information, visit www.edistomuseum.org.
The popular annual oyster roast hosted by the Edisto Island Open Land Trust is slated for Sunday, November 15, at Sand Creek Farm. In addition to oysters, there will be a buffet of Southern food and live music provided by Edisto Gumbo. For more information, visit www.edisto.org.
Thanksgiving weekend brings two special open house shopping events featuring beautiful gifts for holiday giving. On Friday, November 27, the Edisto Museum Annual Open House and Sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. More information can be found by visiting www.edistomuseum.org.
On Saturday, November 28, Flowers Seafood will host their 4th annual oyster roast from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at their location on Hwy 174. Details are available at www.edistochamber.com.
Meanwhile, With These Hands Gallery Open House hours on Friday, November 27, are 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. The Giving Tree will be unveiled on Saturday, November 28. All proceeds from ornaments sold on the tree will be donated to Edisto United who will help families and children in need this holiday season. To celebrate the spirit of giving, Edisto United will host its annual cocktail party at Bay Creek Park on Friday, December 5. The event will run from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will feature live music, cocktails, oysters, and barbecue, as well as raffles and giveaways. To further capture and spread the holiday spirit, the Edisto Community Chorus will offer an evening of beautiful Christmas music on Sunday, December 6, starting at 7:00 p.m. The annual concert will be held at the Edisto Beach Baptist Church, located at 414 Jungle Road on Edisto Beach.
The 25th annual Edisto Christmas parade, “Catch the Edisto Christmas Spirit,” will be held on Saturday, December 12, at 2:00 p.m. The parade will start at the 600 block of Palmetto Boulevard along Edisto Beach and end at the Pavilion, near Edisto Beach State Park. The lighting of the Town Christmas Tree will be held at Bay Creek Park following the parade. A number of afternoon and evening events hosted by local businesses, including oyster roasts, shrimp boils, barbeques, and live music, will follow.
Looking ahead to early 2016, the New Year promises a number of favorites, including the Edisto Eats Festival and Ultimate Chef Competition. The event benefits Edisto United and is scheduled for March 19. Winning chefs and enthusiastic cooks from previous qualifying rounds will “cook-off” in the final event at McConkey’s Jungle Shack for the Ultimate Chef title. Dates for the qualifying rounds will be announced at a later time.
In conjunction with the chef competition, the 5th annual 5K/One Mile Walk and Fun Run will be held on March 19. Residents and visitors are invited to start the day at 8:30 a.m. with a brisk run or walk before attending the chef’s competition event at McConkey’s Jungle Shack. Those seeking a different sort of fare may want to plunge into a performance by the Edisto Art Guild Players. The troupe will present the comedy “Said the Spider to the Spy” at the Edisto Beach Civic Center March 17 through March 20. A dinner theater event will be held on opening night, March 17, and reservations are required.
