ABC News 4: Martin Luther King Jr. Day events happening Monday in the Lowcountry
LOWCOUNTRY, S.C. (WCIV) — Several events across the Lowcountry are honoring the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. Monday.
IAAM KING: An MLK Day Celebration
The International African American Museum (IAAM) will offer complimentary admission to the museum, a showcase of local vendors, food trucks, music, games, activities for kids, and more.
The celebration- sponsored by TD Bank and Boeing- will run from noon to 5 p.m.
Required registration for access to the museum is available on the IAAM website.
MLK Day Parade in downtown Charleston
The YWCA’s parade will start at 10:30 a.m. from Burke High School and will continue until Mother Emanuel AME Church.
It will feature bands, dancers, floats, and more.
The following streets will be temporarily closed for traffic from roughly 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.:
- Fishburne St. between Hagood Ave. and Ashley Ave. (will be closed at 8 a.m.)
- Ashley Ave.
- Sumter St.
- King St.
- Calhoun St.
North Charleston Martin Luther King Day Parade
The Positive Vibes Ronjanae Smith Center will host a North Charleston MLK Day parade at 3 p.m.
The route will begin at the center on Reynolds Avenue and travel one mile up Rivers Avenue for a rally celebrating the life of Dr. King at 3517 Rivers Ave (the old K-Mart parking lot).
Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Extravaganza
The Community Resource Center North Charleston will host a community event with several North Charleston officials, including Mayor Reggie Burgess and Rep. Marvin Pendarvis and Rep. Wendell Gilliard.
The event will include giveaways for items including baby needs, groceries, school supplies, and hygiene items. It starts at 11 a.m.
