Charleston Regional Business Journal: East Cooper Habitat completes neighborhood in Mount Pleasant

East Cooper Habitat for Humanity recently completed an 11-home neighborhood in Mount Pleasant for low-income families.
The homes sit along Joseph Glover Road and McAdams Court, just off of S.C. Highway 41. This marks the second time the nonprofit housing organization has built an entire neighborhood.
The other neighborhood, called Hope Row, includes 14 homes on Eagle Street in Mount Pleasant. It was completed in 2006.
Habitat homes are purchased by the homeowner, who must participate in the construction, with monthly payments under an interest-free mortgage over 30 years. Those payments are directed toward future homebuilding efforts.
Six years and 450 volunteers after construction began on the neighborhood, the last home was completed this summer for owner Elizabeth Venning.
“I’ve never poured cement, but I learned how,” Venning said in a news release. “Now that my home is finished, I’ll keep going back to help, because it’s a good feeling to help others, just like people helped me.”
Many businesses and individuals donated to the project. The Lowcountry Housing Trust, the S.C. Housing Trust Fund and a Builders Blitz project, which was done in partnership with the Charleston Home Builders Association, were major contributors.
The effort also included several local builders: Structures Building Co., John Wieland Homes, J.D. Smith Co. and the I’On Co.
