Discover South Carolina: Bike path offers breezy way to explore Edisto Island
It’s been dubbed “Edi-slow” for good reason. On Edisto Island, the clock ticks on island time. No reason to rush. You’re on vacation, mon.
So, what better way to explore this barrier island than on bike. The five-mile Edisto Island Bike Path will take you on a traffic-free tour through the backside of the beach town past quirky shops and funky restaurants like the SeaCow Eatery and McConkey’s Jungle Shack.
The flat-terrain trail can be easily cycled on most any type of bicycle, from a beach cruiser to a mountain bike. Rentals are available at a couple of different shops if you didn’t haul your own bike with you. Try Island Bikes and Outfitters or Edisto Essentials.
Parking is available near the Edisto Island Marina on the northwest end of the beach. From here, you’ll ride about a mile along Docksite Road and the tranquil lagoons of Fairfield Plantation. At Jungle Road, you’ll take a left and pedal through a residential neighborhood shaded by large trees worthy of the street’s moniker.
The paved path continues to S.C. 174 and a causeway that connects to trails inside Edisto Beach State Park. “Bike Route” signs mark the path at all the turns so you won’t need a map to find your way.
At this end of the trail, there’s no shortage of spots to pick up a snack or stop for lunch before making the five-mile trip back to the parking lot.
