WALTERBORO, SC – March, April, May 2013 – The City of Walterboro, known for its historic charm and abundant natural resources, is ready to “rock” with a blaze of celebrated springtime events designed to entice residents and visitors to get out, pull up a seat, and come take in all that the city, known as the “front porch of the Lowcountry,” has in store for spring.

On Saturday, March 9, USC Salkehatchie Biology Professor Kilpatrick will lead an early spring walking tour through the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a free event starting at 9 a.m. near the Duck Pond at the De Treville Street entrance, 399 De Treville Street. Early April brings the fifth annual Walterboro Wings n’ Wheels, which will showcase of over one hundred antique aircraft and show cars. Pilots and owners will be on hand to talk. There will also be helicopter rides and stunts and aerobatics at this fun filled event geared toward the whole family. Scheduled for Saturday, April 6, the event will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Walterboro Lowcountry Regional Airport, located at 537 Aviation Way, Walterboro, S.C. 29488. With warmer weather in bloom, the Friends of the Great Swamp Sanctuary will entice nature enthusiasts to get outside for a walking tour through the Walterboro Wildlife Sanctuary, led by Master Gardener Genia Floyd. This is a free event and will be held on Saturday, April 20, at 9 a.m., beginning at the 399 De Treville Street entrance. Friday, Saturday & Sunday, April 26, 27, and 28, 2013

Late April brings the annual Colleton County Rice Festival and 5K Rice Run.  Held in downtown Walterboro, this three-day event will feature arts and crafts, food, fireworks, music and a dog show. It promises fun for the entire family. In honor of the festival, the annual Rice Festival Parade will be held on Saturday, April 27, at 11 a.m. Another signature event includes the 5K run and 5K walk, which begin at 8 a.m. that Saturday at the old post office on Washington Street. The Mile Fun Run will begin at the same location at 9 a.m. Cash prizes will be awarded to both a male and female finisher at an awards celebration to follow. Come May, the City of Walterboro will host the 11th annual Downtown Walterboro Criterium, an international bicycling competition as part of the USA Crits Speed Week. This is a free event, and visitors are invited to watch some of the best cyclists in the world race through the streets of downtown Walterboro. The race will take place on Wednesday, May 1, from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. There will also be a children’s race, and special needs bikes will be awarded through the Little Red Dog Foundation and the Walterboro Fire Department. The 7th annual Walterboro Antiques, History & Arts Festival is planned for May 17 and May 18. To kick things off, a Jeans and Jewels barbeque will be held on Friday, May 17, from 6-8 p.m. at the Colleton Museum and Farmers Market. Tickets for the barbeque cost $15.00 per person. Meanwhile, antique vendors will be on site both Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Washington and Lucas Streets. There will be antique appraisals, carriage tours through the historic district, and an antique tractor show. There will also be an antique tractor parade on Saturday at both 11 a.m. and at 2 p.m.

Additionally, a Folk Art Celebration will be held that Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the South Carolina Artisans Center, located at 318 Wichman Street, while a S.C. Watermedia Society Show will be going on at the Colleton Museum, located at 506 E. Washington Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 12 to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Lowcountry Juried Art Exhibition also opens the same weekend on Friday, May 17. This free event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
