Moultrie News: Hidden in plain sight – International African American Museum welcomes visitors
Inside the International African American Museum in Charleston, natural light from large windows overlooking the Charleston Harbor illuminate the exhibits housed in the center of the museum. The view of the harbor — idyllic in nature — also serves as a grim reminder of what happened over two centuries ago.
During the transatlantic slave trade, an estimated 45 percent of enslaved Africans who were brought to the United States first stepped foot in the country at Gadsden’s Wharf — the same location where the museum sits today.
Opened to the public on June 27 after over 20 years of preparation, the International African American Museum’s location is what some call “hidden in plain sight.”
