Southern Living: The SL Hot List: College Football Kickoff, Nostalgic Lunch Boxes, and Shaggin’
August 27, 2012
Kickoff College Football. Because football season can’t come fast enough, we’re starting the party early with the Chick-Fil-A College Kickoff Game August 31 through September 1 in Atlanta. Since 2008, the games have marked the beginning of the season by matching top-ranked college teams in a neutral site at the Georgia Dome.
This is the first year the Kickoff hosts two BCS-style games back-to-back days with Tennessee and North Carolina State playing Friday, followed by Auburn and Clemson Saturday (host the best tailgate in the lot with our Complete Guide to Tailgating).
Catch The High’s Southern Photo Exhibit. It’s your last chance to see the latest installation from the High Museum of Art’s current MoMA Series. As a partnership with New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the High is showing 150 images from MoMA’s Picturing The North exhibit, which showcases The Big Apple through the lens of famous photographers. Running alongside Picturing The North, is the High’s Picturing The South collection, for which famed photographers like Sally Mann, and Dawoub Bey have lent their view of the South. During Picturing The North/Picturing The South, the High debuted the 76 works produced by the its most recent commissioned photographers—Martin Parr, Kael Alford, and Shane Lavelette. Running through September 2
Take In a Southern Historic Crime Film. Set in Prohibition-era Franklin, Virginia, Lawless, lays down the story of three bootlegging brothers (Shia LeBouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke) trying to preserve the family business. Celebrate South Carolina’s Official Dance. Labor Day weekend is host to the largest Carolina shag competition during the third annual Edisto Music and Shag Fest at Bay Creek Park in Edisto, South Carolina. A two-day party with food, live music, and more than 2,000 peeps swinging the night away? We’re all over that! Bring your lucky slippers; the winning team gets $300 and a shiny trophy. August 31-September 1
Get Carried Away By Lunch Box Nostalgia. Though our school days are long gone, we can’t help but reminisce over that old grade-school Munsters lunch box, as we gear the kids up for the new school year. That’s why we’re loving this new Taking America to Lunch exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in D.C. The collection showcases 75 designs from the 1890s through the 1980s. See how we evolved from tin pails to Barbie vinyl boxes, and then go out and buy a vintage carrier for your kiddos. We guarantee the kid with the Evil Knievel lunch box will still be the coolest cat at the lunch table.
