WCIV-TV: Walterboro enhances its downtown

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) – Walterboro wants to invite visitors to rock on the front porch of the Lowcountry.

“We have 40,000 to 60,000 cars a day pass through Walterboro, so it’s important to us to try to bring those visitors in to our business area, for economic reasons,” said Mayor Bill Young.

The city hopes a completed beautification project will turn more folks their direction.

“We’ve done a lot to enhance the city’s appearance,” he said.

The arborscape project began last September and took two months to complete. The projected included the planting of 82 trees, paving streets, new brick crosswalks, and adding irrigation.

The city also plans to expand enhancements through the Interstate 95 corridor.

“It will extend the beautification of arborscape project done there that will extend a seven mile loop one exit to the other,” he said.

Once completed, there will be a landscaped tree lined corridor that welcomes visitors to the business areas.

The first phase of the loop project will be between Hampton and Wichman streets and begin late this summer or early fall.

This will include decorative lighting and mast arms for traffic signals and will be more bike and pedestrian friendly.
