Deck the coast with boughs of holly
At Edisto, things will soon be bright and jolly, right into the New Year
Edisto Island, S.C. — The Edisto Island and Edisto Beach communities are all set to decorate from stem to stern for another festive holiday season. The year ahead promises a bounty of options on this pristine barrier island just an hour south of Charleston, where the weather is fine most all the time.
The Edisto Community Chorus will offer a robust start to the season with an evening of beautiful carols. Sure to get everyone in the holiday mood, the Christmas Concert is set for Sunday, December 8, at 7 p.m., and is sponsored by the Edisto Ministerial Alliance. The performance will be held at the Edisto Beach Baptist Church, located at 414 Jungle Road on Edisto Beach.
The following week brings the 23rd annual Edisto Christmas parade: “Edisto Holiday Cheer.” Sponsored by the Edisto Chamber of Commerce, the parade will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 14th. It starts at the 600 block of Palmetto Boulevard along Edisto Beach and ends at the Pavilion, near Edisto Beach State Park. The lighting of the Town Christmas Tree will be held at 1:30 p.m., prior to the start of the parade. A number of afternoon and evening events hosted by local businesses, including oyster roasts, shrimp boils, barbeques, and live music, will follow.
Looking beyond the holidays to the ever-alluring spring, early 2014 holds a number of special events. The 4th annual Edisto Ultimate Chef Competition is scheduled for March 15th. Winning chefs and enthusiastic cooks from previous qualifying rounds will “cook-off” in the final event at McConkey’s Jungle Shack for the Ultimate Chef title. Dates for the qualifying rounds will be announced at a later time.
In conjunction with the chef competition, the 3rd annual 5K/One Mile Walk and Fun Run will also be held on March 15th. Residents and visitors are invited to start the day at 8:30 a.m. with a brisk run or walk before attending the chef’s competition event at McConkey’s Jungle Shack.
Later that month, the Edisto Art Guild Players will present the comedy “The Second Lady” at the Edisto Beach Civic Center March 20th through March 23rd. A dinner theater event will be held on opening night, March 20th. This is an event that will sell out quickly. Those interested in getting tickets are encouraged to do so early.
Other popular events to enjoy throughout the year at this sea island escape include seasonal craft shows by the Edisto Art Guild, fishing and golf tournaments, the annual Edisto Day Bazaar, the Edisto Beach Shag Fest, the Edisto Beach Shrimp Fest, the popular Edisto & Beyond Tour, the Edisto Beach Fall Festival, and the Edisto Bluegrass Festival, a popular new event in the fall of 2013 that stands to become another annual draw.
Set in a rare, sparsely-developed corner of the world, Edisto, with its vast green spaces, ancient live oaks, wide open marsh views, and quiet, pristine beach, offers a coastal island experience uncommon today among Eastern seaboard communities. Visitors and residents alike enjoy a slower pace of life, coupled with a broad range of year-round recreational activities, all set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This is the coastal island destination that is said to offer its own “state of mind…any time, any season.” For more information, please call the Edisto Chamber of Commerce at 843-869-3867 or 1-888-333-2781 or visit www.edistochamber.com.
