Five arrests made in fatal shooting
Walterboro, S.C. – Walterboro Public Safety and SLED have continued their investigation of a fatal shooting last night in Walterboro. The victim has been identified as Stephon D. Young, 24 years old from Walterboro. Five arrests have now been made related to the incident.
On April 13, 2013, at approximately 6:46 p.m., Walterboro Public Safety officers responded in response to a shooting at Crosby and Francis Streets. There they made contact with Young, who was lying on the ground unresponsive. Officers initiated CPR until emergency medical personnel arrived. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the coroner.
On call investigators and SLED were notified and responded. Upon further investigation, they learned that shortly before the incident, Young and Errol Jackson met on Francis Street near Crosby Street with Desmond D. Kirkland, Lorenzo L. Helton, Marquay C. Brown, and Joey D. Coleman. An altercation ensued and the victim was shot. All parties departed the area.
Jackson returned to the scene a short time later, where he was detained and taken to Walterboro Public Safety for questioning. He was charged with Obstruction of Justice for tampering with evidence.
The other four who were involved, Kirkland, Helton, Brown and Coleman, met with officers at Walterboro Public Safety office a short time later. After conducting interviews, all four were arrested and charged with Murder.
The incident does not appear to be gang related nor related to any other shooting that has occurred recently within Colleton County.
Three handguns were also recovered. The specific details of the handguns, motive and other information is not available for release at this time, due to the ongoing investigation. Photos of the individuals (below) may be obtained from the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office.
