Walterboro makes arrest in bank robbery case

Walterboro, S.C. – The Walterboro Public Safety Department has made an arrest in connection to a robbery that occurred on December 17, 2010, at South Carolina Bank & Trust, located at 520 North Jeffries Boulevard. Marvin Jerriel Lamar Bowens, age 18, has been charged with robbery.

On December 17, the Walterboro Public Safety Department received a call just before 4 p.m. stating that the South Carolina Bank & Trust had been robbed. According to reports, the suspect entered the bank, presented a handgun, and demanded money. He then fled the scene in a pewter or gold colored car with an undisclosed amount of money.

At approximately 10:40 that evening, a gold Acura approaching a DUI checkpoint on Paul Street started to turn around. As officers neared the vehicle, the driver got out and fled. He was apprehended after a short foot pursuit. Noting that both the driver and vehicle matched the description of the bank robbery suspect, officers contacted detectives assigned to the case. Upon seeing the driver, detectives recognized him as the same man from the video surveillance video and charged him with robbery.

Anyone with any information about a crime is asked to make a call, which may remain anonymous, to the Walterboro Public Safety at 843-549-1811.
